Rebels, civilian protesters storm Libya parliament

Mohammed Dabbous / Reuters, file

Libya's national assembly elected Ali Zeidan as prime minister on October 14. His transitional government would replace an interim administration appointed in November after Moammar Gadhafi's death.

By NBC News wire services

TRIPOLI, Libya -- Protesters stormed Libya's national assembly on Tuesday, forcing the cancellation of a vote on a proposed coalition government named by the country's new prime minister just hours earlier.

Fewer than 100 people, made up of civilians and former rebel fighters, charged into the meeting hall of the General National Congress as it voted on Prime Minister Ali Zeidan's cabinet line-up, which was drawn from liberal and Islamist parties.

In chaotic televised scenes, congress members negotiated with the protesters, who were unhappy with some of the nominations, to leave. Voting then briefly resumed before being interrupted a second time, leading congress president?Mohammed Magarief?to announce the session was postponed to Wednesday.

"Let it be known to all Libyans and to the whole world in what conditions we are working in," Magarief said.

Libya's new president, Mohammed Magarief, tells NBC's Ann Curry that the recent trouble in Libya is the unfortunate price of creating a democracy after decades of dictator-rule. Magarief lived in exile for 20 years in Atlanta before returning to Libya and becoming president.

For Zeidan to take office, the congress has to approve his transitional government, which will focus on restoring security in the oil-producing country where many militias have yet to disarm since Moammar Gadhafi's overthrow last year.

Zeidan's transitional government would replace an interim administration appointed in November after Gadhafi's death.

Some ministers come from the liberal National Forces Alliance or the Muslim Brotherhood's political wing, the Justice and Construction Party, the two biggest parties in the 200-member congress. Others are independents.

Aware of Libya's sharp regional tensions, Zeidan said he had tried to strike a geographic balance among his 27 ministers.

"No region has been favored over any other," he told congress earlier on Tuesday. "We don't want to repeat mistakes or provoke the street."

Congress elected Zeidan as prime minister this month after his predecessor, Mustafa Abushagur, lost a confidence vote on his choice of ministers, criticized inside and outside the assembly.

An uprising in Libya ousts dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

A former career diplomat who defected in the 1980s to become an outspoken Gadhafi critic, Zeidan will govern the country while the congress, elected in July, passes laws and helps draft a new constitution to be put to a national referendum next year.

Security challenges
Outgoing Defense Minister Osama al-Juwali exposed the scale of the security challenge facing Libya's new rulers when he said on Monday the government had no control over Bani Walid, a former Gadhafi stronghold captured by militia forces supposedly loyal to Tripoli on October 24.

A look at the life and times of Libya's mercurial and flamboyant leader

Al-Juwali said he had tried to visit the town, but troops accompanying him had been denied access. This, he said, showed that "the chief of staff has no control over the town, and this might mean armed men won't allow civilians to go back."

More Libya coverage from NBC News

Five days earlier, the army chief of staff had announced the end of military operations in Bani Walid, one of the last towns to fall to rebels in last year's war, but which some militias had accused of still sheltering Gadhafi supporters.

Last year's fight that ended in Gadhafi's ouster and death after 42 years in power was largely carried out by regional militias that amassed weapons. But long after the civil war ended, the militias continue to serve under their own leaders and wield significant power even though they have nominally come under the control of the state's military and police forces.

The lack of control of the government over the militias it relies on was brought home in the starkest terms on Sept. 11, the day of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, the eastern city where last year's uprising against Gadhafi began. The Islamist group Ansar al-Shariah, one of the biggest militias in Benghazi, is suspected in the assault that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Officials in Libya say they have arrested four suspects in connection to the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi in which U.S. ambassador Stevens and three embassy staff were killed. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Tripoli.

The killings in Benghazi fueled popular anger against the militias. Just a week after the assault, tens of thousands of Benghazis attacked the headquarters of Ansar al-Shariah and another militia in Benghazi and drove them out.

The government took advantage of the public anger. In the days after the attack, authorities carried out high-profile weapon hand-ins in Tripoli and Benghazi and issued ultimatums for all militias to submit entirely to government control.

Friends and family members of the victims of the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, recall loved ones' bravery and courage. TODAY's Savannah Guthrie reports.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Grovefield House Hotel launches pie of the month ? Food and Drink ...

Sensing that the end of summer is nigh and the colder weather is on its way, the restaurant at the Grovefield House Hotel has launched its new ?pie of the month? campaign.

Head Chef Imad crafted the recipe for the first of his pies ? a ham hock with pea filling ? in the kitchen of Hamilton?s Restaurant, the recently re-accredited two AA rosettes eatery that combines hearty English classic dishes with Modern European cuisine.

The pie ? and indeed all of the food at the Grovefield ? takes its influences from Imad?s varied upbringing and culinary experiences. He grew up in the Lebanon and, before coming to Britain, spent five years in Greece mastering the art of cooking fresh fish, all of which translates into the dishes he has created in the kitchens at The Bear Hotel in Woodstock; The Castle Hotel in Windsor, the Michelin-starred Gravetye Manor and Le Meridien in London.

His team uses the finest in locally sourced ingredients and over the coming months the different flavours of the pies will reflect the cooking style of the restaurant, with modern takes on classic recipes.

The ham hock and pea pie is available now in the lounge bar of the Grovefield House Hotel and comes with mashed potato, gravy and seasonal vegetables for ?9.95.

Emma Bedall, General Manager of the Grovefield says the new pies are one of a number of new meals to be added to the menu in the coming months: ?Having sampled the first of Imad?s pies, I can guarantee visitors will love them,? she says. ?There will be several variations on classics like chicken and mushroom and steak and ale, each of them will be as delicious as each other!?

My Short Halloween Fiction Story ? that multi-tasker. rar.

?But I?m scared.? said the little boy who?s afraid of the dark.

?We?ll be right next to your room, sweetie. Good night.? His mother smiled, gave him a kiss on the forehead turning off the lights before she left the room.

Jimmy just moved into the new house with his parents. It was his first night. The house was small but big enough to accommodate two adults and a 6-year-old boy.? His parents loved the house but not Jimmy. He could never understand why his parents wanted to move.

?Jimmy, you have to understand that daddy and I love this place. But we have to move to another better place.?

?But why mummy? Now I can never play with Dilly and Nick. I like Mr. Frank he?s the best teacher in the world! I don?t want another person to teach me Science!? Jimmy pouted his mouth. His eyes were wet.

She let out a deep sigh. She kneeled down next to Jimmy, running her hands through his hair. ?I?m sorry, my dear. It?s something that you will only understand when you grow older.? Then she kissed his head. ?We can always come visit them.?

Jimmy?s face was already wet. His tears continue to trickle down as his mother hugged him tight. He could not accept the fact that he might never see his friends ever again. Mr. Frank told him that his new place is 6 hours drive from here. There was absolutely no way he could drive or take a bus because he doesn?t know how to.

The yellow blue moon light shined through the high windows in the room. He laid down on his bed looking through one of the windows. The moon was the roundest he has ever seen and also the brightest blue moon he can ever imagined. His eyes got used to the darkness in his room.

He could not sleep. He was not even sleepy. His room was dusty and drafty. He could even hear creaks sometimes if he paid enough attention. He wondered if monsters would come through his door. The thought of that shuddered him. He flicked open the lamp beside his bed. He rummaged through his stash of books in the paper box. He picked out his all time favorite book, jumped onto his bed and hid underneath his blanket. He flipped open the first page and read it aloud but soft enough so his parents could not hear him.

As he reached the third page his eyelids became heavier and his voice became softer. Slowly he rested his head on his open book. He fell asleep.

Creak!

He jerked from his sleep.

Creak!

This time he knew his door room was open. He was still underneath his blanket and he was silent. He tried his best not to move a limb. He could hear footsteps coming into the room. And it?s not just footsteps. It was as if someone was dragging something heavy across the floor. His heart started to beat really fast. The footsteps were getting closer now. Underneath his blanket, he could see shadows moving. He hope the thing would just leave him alone.

The footsteps stopped. The noises stopped.

He could only hear his own breath and his heart beating fast.

He heard the footsteps and dragging noise again but going distant this time.

Creak!

He jerked a little and heard the door closed. He was still underneath his blanket. He did not dare to move even a bit. His lamp was still flickering and his heart was still beating fast. That lasted for the longest time and Jimmy fell asleep.

Jimmy opened his eyes and realised that it was already morning. The sun was shining brightly through the window and birds were chirping outside. It took him a minute to realise that he was at his new house and figured out what happened the night before.

His room was completely normal. It still smelled dusty.

He heard a knock on his door and his mother peeped in.

?Ah you?re up. Good morning sweetie. Go get washed up.? She said with a smile before closing the door.

He headed over to the bathroom. He slowly walked down the flight of stairs. Each step he took gave out a loud creak.

?Good morning mum. Good morning dad.? He said as he stepped into the kitchen.

His mother was at the stove cooking and his father was behind the newspaper. His mother turned her head around and asked him if he would like pancakes or waffles. He replied waffles.

He took a sit next to his father.

?Did you sleep well last night?? His father asked, still behind the papers.

He nodded, hesitantly.

?You?ll get used to it, boy.? He said.

Jimmy could not resist so he asked, ?Do you believe in monsters??

His father choked on his coffee and his mother laughed.

?Monsters don?t exist! Don?t worry, son. You?ll be fine.? His father said giving out a small laugh.

?You must had a bad nightmare, sweetie.? His mother said.

His father closed and folded the papers. ?I have to go. See you later.? He bent down and kissed Jimmy and his mother before leaving.

Jimmy heard the car engine started, then left. His mother placed a plate of waffles in front of Jimmy and he took a small bite. His mother sat opposite him, looking at Jimmy. ?Where do you want to go today?? She asked.

School only starts the next day for Jimmy so he was free for the day. He shook his head and replied, ?Nowhere.? Still chewing his waffle.

?Are you sure??? She asked.

He nodded silently, taking another bite.

?I?m sorry Jimmy but I hope you?ll love this town soon enough.? And then she walked away towards the kitchen sink and started cleaning the utensils.

Jimmy took the last bite and passed his plate to his mother.

He walked over to his backyard and there were witted plants all over. Even the tree looked creepy. It was a gloomy day and the weather was a bit chilly. He hanged around in the backyard until lunchtime.

After lunch, he explored the front porch this time and saw his neighbour, an old woman carrying a bucket of water. He ran over and asked her, ?Do you need my help? I can help you carry that.?

The woman smiled and replied, ?That?s so sweet of you darling but I think this is too heavy for you.? Then she poured the bucket of water into the drain. ?You?re new here aren?t you? Saw a big truck in front of your house a few days ago moving in stuffs into the house.?

He nodded and told the woman, ?I don?t like moving here. I don?t like this place.?

The woman laughed while carrying her empty bucket and headed to the main door. ?I?ve baked some cookies. Come in, young boy.?

He hesitated but went in anyway realising that an old lady can do nothing to him.

The house smelled of incense. The type of smell that Jimmy would smell every time he goes to church with his parents. The floor creaked every time he took a step. The woman guided him to the kitchen. She took out the freshly baked chocolate cookies from her oven and placed them on the table.

Jimmy took one and munched on it. It had different taste to the ones that his mother usually bakes. It tasted richer. He loves chocolate so he munched on more. The woman made tea and sat opposite him.

?You love them don?t you?? She said.

Jimmy grabbed another cookie and nodded. He asked the woman, ?You stay here alone??

The lady nodded, ?All my life.?

He then let out a yawn.

?Didn?t sleep well last night did you?? She asked, smiling at the boy.

Jimmy put down his cookie and asked the lady, ?Do you believe in monsters??

The lady looked at him intensely. She did not smile and said, ?There are other creatures and living things that live amongst us. Only a certain of us can see them. They only come out in the dark and especially during full moon. They come and hunt us humans at night.?

Jimmy was quiet. He was waiting for the woman to finish her story.

She continued, ?They don?t eat us nor kill us.? Jimmy let out a deep breath. ?But, if they find us, they will break our arms and then the legs, alive. I don?t know what they will do with them but our body they will let it decay, slowly, making sure you can feel the maggots eating your flesh, alive. And when only your bones are left, then only they will let you die.?

Jimmy looked at the woman after she was done. He found his voice and asked, ?H-h-have you seen them before??

The woman answered, ?Yes, once. When I was little. But I was lucky. I got away.?

Jimmy asked her how.

?I was hiding inside my blanket when the thing came into my room. I could hear the footsteps coming nearer to my bed. Then the thing stopped and left my room. I was safe.?

Jimmy asked why. His heart was beating fast.

?They don?t attack those who believed in them.?

Jimmy was speechless, couldn?t make up the words he wanted to ask inside his head.

?The next day when I woke up I told my family what happened the night before and no one believed in me. Everyone thought I had a bad dream. The next thing I know, my whole family disappeared the next day. Nobody knew where they went. The police searched up and down the town and no trace could be found.?

Jimmy choked. He was not feeling well so he asked if he could leave.

?Of course my dear. Come back anytime.? The woman said happily. And before he left, she whispered, ?They are everywhere.?

He went back to his house trying to forget what the woman told him. He had very little dinner because the story made him really sick.

During bedtime he asked his mother and father if he could sleep with them.

?Monsters don?t exist. Don?t be silly!? His mother kissed his forehead and left his room.

Jimmy quickly flicked open his bedside lamp. He was awake for the longest time and then he fell asleep. He had a really great sleep.

The warm sunlight woke him up from his sleep the next morning. He washed up and climbed downstairs. There was no one to be found. He ran upstairs to his parents? bedroom. There was no one to be found as well. He walked towards his parent?s window and looked down.

In his backyard, he could see the old lady standing there looking up at him. Her lips curved showing her yellow teeth. It was the most scariest and creepiest grin he had ever seen in his life. And outside the room, he could hear the staircase creaked, as if someone or something was climbing up the stairs, leaving a loud echo in the empty house.

How to make stem cells - nuclear reprogramming moves a step forward

Monday, October 29, 2012

The idea of taking a mature cell and removing its identity (nuclear reprogramming) so that it can then become any kind of cell, holds great promise for repairing damaged tissue or replacing bone marrow after chemotherapy. Hot on the heels of his recent Nobel prize Dr John B. Gurdon has published today in BioMed Central's open access journal Epigenetics & Chromatin research showing that histone H3.3 deposited by the histone-interacting protein HIRA is a key step in reverting nuclei to a pluripotent type, capable of being any one of many cell types.

All of an individual's cells have the same DNA, yet these cells become programmed, as the organism matures, into different types such as heart, or lung or brain. To achieve this different genes are more or less permanently switched off in each cell lineage. As an embryo grows, after a certain number of divisions, it is no longer possible for cells which have gone down the pathway to become something else. For example heart cells cannot be converted into lung tissue, and muscle cells cannot form bone.

One way to reprogram DNA is to transfer the nucleus of a mature cell into an unfertilized egg. Proteins and other factors inside the egg alter the DNA switching some genes on and other off until it resembles the DNA of a pluripotent cell. However there seem to be some difficulties with this method in completely wiping the cell's 'memory'.

One of the mechanisms regulating the activation of genes is chromatin and in particular histones. DNA is wrapped around histones and alteration in how the DNA is wound changes which genes are available to the cell. In order to understand how nuclear reprogramming works Dr Gurdon's team transplanted a mouse nucleus into a frog oocyte (Xenopus laevis). They added fluorescently tagged histones by microinjection, so that they could see where in the cell and nucleus the these histones collected.

Prof Gurdon explained, "Using real-time microscopy it became apparent that from 10 hours onwards H3.3 (the histone involved with active genes) expressed in the oocyte became incorporated into the transplanted nucleus. When we looked in detail at the gene Oct4, which is known to be involved in making cells pluripotent, we found that H3.3 was incorporated into Oct4, and that this coincided with the onset of transcription from the gene." Prof Gurdon's team also found that Hira, a protein required to incorporate H3.3 into chromatin, was also required for nuclear reprogramming.

Dr Steven Henikoff, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, commented, "Manipulating the H3.3 pathway may provide a way to completely wipe a cell's 'memory' and produce a truly pluripotent cell. Half a century after showing that cells can be reprogrammed this research provides a link to the work of Shinya Yamanaka (who shared the prize), and suggests that chromatin is a sticking point preventing artificially induced reprogramming being used routinely in the clinic."

Airport Transfer - Reduce The Stress, Raise The Comfort And Ease

Are you always out of town? Do you always make business excursions for your organization? Is it difficult for you to transfer from one automobile to another? Are the tours difficult? Avid visitors and businessmen can certainly relate to the concerns previously mentioned. They understand how hard it is to have unorganized excursions all the time. Your suitcase is one difficulty and transfers are another and this results to incredible tension in most parts. Rather of taking enjoyment in your trip, you are so drowned with the hustles and bustles of your surroundings. Here's what's best for your needs: Airport Transfer!

Visitors can point out that airport transfers are a breath of outdoors, simply because they do not have to cope with the aggravations of hailing a taxi every time they get out of the airstrip. Gone are the times when you have to fall in line and wait for your turn to get a taxi and even stay away from spats with other visitors as well. This transfer service has grown wide and is recognized by a lot of individuals at this time. It doesn't just take you away from the annoying airstrip procedures but it also assures punctuality, comfort, ease and security. What do you know, crooks have already been inventive through the years, and that might have been your taxi operator.

There are a whole load of advantages in having your very own airport transfer. Assure your safety and privacy throughout the time of the travel. Here's a thought; the less people the fewer things to worry about. In addition, if you are on a business travel, time is extremely important. You can't throw away your time waiting around simply because you might end up missing the meeting, who would like that? It also provides comfort and ease, simply because you are alone, you can have time for personal issues and maybe release up a tiny bit all through the duration of the travel, a minimum of when you get where you are intended to be, you are rejuvenated. These things are adequate to change other individual's mind.

For more affordable prices, know what type of vehicle you need to have so that you can plan for it. Why spend a whole lot of cash for things you do not require? Getting the right type of vehicle also plays a big part all through the travel period. Figure out the space or room that you require. Ask questions like, "Do I have a lot of suitcases?" "Just how much space can I cover?" this will verify exactly how big a car you need when touring. The city's airport transfer can fulfill a traveler's need.

We live our lives within our media, rather than simply with it, expert says

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? With the introduction of every new multimedia device, such as handheld computers, smartphones, social media channels and game systems, pundits and researchers alike offer views on how using them increasingly affects our everyday life.

But to Indiana University professor Mark Deuze, they are another opportunity to discuss how we live our lives within this media, rather than simply with it.

"If anything, today the uses and appropriations of media can be seen as fused with everything people do, everywhere people are, everyone people aspire to be," Deuze wrote in the overview of his new book, "Media Life" (Cambridge Polity Books), which explores the interconnected and essential role of media in our daily lives.

"There is no external to media life -- whatever we perceive as escape hatch, passage out or potential Delete key is just an illusion. In fact, we can only imagine a life outside media," added Deuze, an associate professor of telecommunications in IU's College of Arts and Sciences.

"Media are to us as water is to fish. This does not mean life is determined by media -- it just suggests that whether we like it or not, every aspect of our lives takes place in media."

Any parent who has a teenager with a mobile phone will appreciate Deuze's hypothesis.

The IU professor's position runs counter to what many others in his field of media and communications research think: that the media and its related devices have an effect on us and that the more we use them, the more they shape our lives.

"After years of teaching about this, I began to realize that there might be something fundamentally flawed about all of these assumptions, in the sense that they're all based on the premise that we can control media," he said in an interview.

In "Media Life," Deuze set out to challenge these assumptions and examine how our lives are changing in a world where the divides between channels and content and between interpersonal and mediated communication are melting away.

A reference counterpoint for the book was Sherry Turkle's 2011 best-seller, "Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other." Where Turkle keeps humans and their machines apart and thus signals the increased intimacy between them with worry, Deuze suggests that our closeness to technologies helps to reveal the interdependency of all of us -- including the planet and our technologies.

"What we do in media has magical qualities," he says, "because we can see each other and ourselves live. This kind of visibility should make us aware of our shared social responsibility."

For his research, Deuze considered the ways in which people live in media around the world -- from the United States to his home country, The Netherlands, and from South Africa to Hong Kong. He studied the role of mobile phones in developing nations as well as the developed world's current obsession with Internet-enabled HDTVs.

At the heart of Deuze's project was answering the question of "what a good, passionate, beautiful and socially responsible media life looks like."

"In terms of what media communicate, it is tempting to point to governments, companies and corporations for pushing an unrelenting, ever-accelerating stream of content and experiences into our lives," he said. "However, most mediated communication comprises work done by you and me: through our endless texts, chats and emails, with our phone calls from anywhere at any time, and through our online social networks that function as the living archives of social reality.

"With the majority of the world population owning a mobile phone, telecommunication networks spanning almost every inch of the globe, sales figures of any and all media devices growing steadily worldwide, time spent with media up every year, and any and all media by default integrated into an always-on real-time live mode of being, an almost complete mediatization of society seems a somewhat self-evident observation."

Rather than our being "addicted" to our tablets, mobile phones and video game players, Deuze said we have a "profoundly emotional relationship that we have with our media and through our media with other people."

Deuze doesn't believe this is a new phenomenon created by the Internet, drawing parallels between prehistoric cave paintings and Facebook's "wall."

"It's like cave paintings; what are we painting on the wall -- stories about who we are, where do we belong and what really matters to the community that we think we are a part of -- that's the definition of every status update," he said. "Nothing that we're doing now is new, it's just that it is more visible and everybody participates in it. It used to be that only a privileged few could paint the walls of the cave; now we're all doing it."

In the book's final chapter, Deuze brings together all of the elements of his exploration of life as lived in the media through the diagnosis of a Truman Show Delusion. North American psychologists Joel and Ian Gold have suggested that classical syndromes such as narcissism and paranoia, in combination with pervasive information technologies that blur the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds, have produced new kinds of psychoses.

"In media life, the world can certainly seem like a television studio as in the 'Truman Show' movie, with the significant difference that there is no exit," Deuze said. "The question is therefore not how to avoid or destroy the media in our lives -- we should rather investigate what Truman Burbank (the Jim Carrey character) could do if he decided to stay inside of his fully mediated life.

"As with Truman, we do not just have to perform for the cameras -- the cameras can also perform for us. Whether we like it or not, I think we are slowly but surely becoming information players and creators rather than simply those who are expected to work with the information that is given to us. We can indeed create art with life. In media, that is."

Deuze also addresses these issues through his blog. His previous book, "Media Work" (Cambridge: Polity Press, 2007), focused on people working with various forms of media worldwide. He collaborated with Dutch artist Miek van Dongen on illustrations in "Media Life," which were exhibited earlier this fall at IU's Grunwald Gallery.

New England shapes up as Dem firewall for Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats are counting on their New England friends to help them pick up Republican-held Senate seats on Nov. 6 and construct a barrier against losses in Nebraska and elsewhere that could erase their majority.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has stopped spending money in Maine, where former Gov. Angus King, an independent, leads in the polls and is seen as likely to side with Democrats if he wins. In Massachusetts, Republican Sen. Scott Brown is suddenly considered the underdog against Elizabeth Warren as the state is poised to easily back President Barack Obama over former Gov. Mitt Romney.

"She's closing the argument by linking Brown with national Republicans, who are about as popular around here as the New York Yankees," said Mike Shea, a Democratic strategist in Boston.

Republican hopes of swiping the seat in Connecticut are fading. Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy has steadied his campaign against former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, who spent $50 million on an unsuccessful bid in 2010 and $42.6 million and counting this year. McMahon's less-than-stellar debate performances and the state's Democratic tilt have undercut the GOP candidate's prospects.

"If New England could tip the Senate's balance to the Republicans, it would be fairly earth-shattering," said Rob Gray, a veteran GOP consultant in Massachusetts. "The real question is whether these races will be close-but-no-cigar for Republicans."

In Senate math, the loss of two seats in New England complicates the GOP calculation for majority control. Republicans would have to gain a net of six seats while holding suddenly uncertain Indiana, or a net of five seats if Romney wins the presidency. Democrats currently have the edge 53-47, including two independents who caucus with the party.

On the Election Day ballot are 23 Democratic seats and 10 Republican.

Republicans are optimistic they can make it add up and they point to fresh enthusiasm for Romney and the party ticket. After weeks of pure toss-ups, Republicans say North Dakota and Wisconsin are trending GOP though still close, Montana remains tight and the contest in Ohio has narrowed, due in large part to the roughly $20 million in negative ads against Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.

In a late move, the GOP invested $500,000 in Pennsylvania, where some polls show a tight race between first-term Sen. Bob Casey and tea-party backed businessman Tom Smith, who has invested more than $16 million into his bid. The state has been considered safe Democratic for much of the year.

Republicans and Democrats expect Nebraska to switch to the GOP despite the candidacy of former Sen. Bob Kerrey, and Virginia to stay close, with the outcome of the presidential election crucial to the final count.

That's not so in Florida. Romney has grabbed a slight lead in polling, but there are no signs that it has helped Republican Rep. Connie Mack in his race to unseat two-term Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. In the most telling development, outside Republican groups bailed on the Senate race at the beginning of October and there is no indication they will resume spending in the closing days.

Guy Cecil, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said he was cautiously optimistic about Democrats holding their majority.

"Frankly a lot in our own party gave us little chance to be competitive this cycle, in large part because they were looking at a map where we had two times as many Democratic seats and we were coming off the worse election cycle for Democrats in 75 years," Cecil said. "Certainly despite that fact and the fact that we had seven retirements, we are in a stronger position today than at any point in the cycle."

Privately, Republicans are nervous about Indiana, unsure about the political damage from Republican state treasurer Richard Mourdock's debate comment that pregnancy resulting from rape is "something God intended."

Democrats are spending $1.1 million on an ad saying even Romney and Rep. Mike Pence, who is running for governor, "believe Mourdock goes too far." Worried about Mourdock, the anti-tax Club for Growth, a strong proponent of the Republican in his primary win over six-term Sen. Richard Lugar, invested more money on Friday, raising its state spending to more than $3.5 million.

Up until the debate, Mourdock's race with Rep. Joe Donnelly had been close; the comment could prove decisive in the campaign's closing days.

Republicans dismiss Democratic hopes of capturing the Arizona Senate seat, arguing that Rep. Jeff Flake has consistently maintained a lead in the polls over Richard Carmona. Democrats cringed recently when Carmona told the male moderator at a debate with Flake that he was prettier than CNN's Candy Crowley, who moderated the second presidential debate. Carmona later apologized to Crowley.

Determined to change the trajectory of the race, Democrats released an ad of the state's two Republican senators delivering effusive testimonials about Carmona at his 2002 Senate confirmation hearing for U.S. surgeon general in President George W. Bush's administration.

"One might call him a man for all seasons," says Sen. Jon Kyl.

"He's extraordinarily, perhaps uniquely qualified, to address the need of our nation," Sen. John McCain says.

Republicans have countered with ads in Arizona, Indiana, Montana and North Dakota, linking the Democratic candidates to Obama and in some cases, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, with images of the president and California Democrat.

"Once Heidi was different, but now she's fighting for Obama not us," says a commercial about North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp, who is in a close race with Rep. Rick Berg.

The GOP spot against Carmona calls him Obama's rubber stamp. The one against Donnelly says a vote for him is a vote for the Obama-Pelosi agenda. "Say no to this yes man," the ad says.

In Missouri, the once vulnerable Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill is trying to hold onto her seat against Rep. Todd Akin, who severely damaged his candidacy when he said women's bodies can avoid pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." National Republicans, including Romney, abandoned Akin, but conservatives and evangelicals still stand behind his candidacy.

Full Moon in Taurus October 29, 2012 Astrology Horoscope ...

It?s officially a Full Moon in Taurus on Monday, October 29th, 2012 at 3:49 pm EDT.

This Full Moon is locked into the Frankenstorm, the popularized name given to Hurricane Sandy so close to Halloween. It?s also being called other big names such as a Mammoth Storm, Monster Storm and a Super Storm. Many news articles are mentioning the power of this Full Moon influencing the tidal pull increasing the possibility of?storm surges and?flooding. This hurricane and the Halloween season are bringing the energy of this Full Moon to a wider audience and to the collective consciousness.

Taurus has it?s roots in the Earth, expect to see shifts around this Full Moon related to the material world. Because of this major storm, safety and security on the material level along with financial impact are also in heightened focus. Although our readers are from around the world and the East Coast is not the sole focus of the planet, nonetheless these considerations are on the minds of millions?of people now, especially with strong media attention. The media affects our collective consciousness, for better or worse. With the Sun in Scorpio and Saturn nearby, it?s very important for people in the storms path to take care of themselves doing what is necessary to minimize flooding. There?s also snow in many area?s. It?s also a reminder to be prepared in the event of any earth changes and our perceptions of how we influence the world around us, locally and globally. The lessons of a Taurus Full Moon are for everyone. Astrology is a part of all our lives.

On a personal level this is a time of considering how you reveal yourself to the world and what footprints you leave behind with each step you take. Are you ready to be more honest and forthcoming about who you are and what you want in the world? Do you see yourself as someone who can impact the world around you by being here and asserting your wants and needs for a better tomorrow? Who do you honestly wish to be, and do you want to be seen for the real, authentic you? It?s a good time to think about how you?ll go about being who you are meant to be and what your purpose in the world is. What do you stand for?

For many people Saturn brings fear, and although it is important to be cautious, some media outlets are hyping fear as sensationalism. They know it?s easy to get caught up in fear and have all eyes glued to the TV and thus higher ratings.?It?s important to be aware and share awareness, but it?s irresponsible to be an alarmist.

With the Full Moon in Taurus emotions and security can certainly be heightened so be cautious of how caught up in the drama you get.?Don?t get drawn into the lower consciousness fear can create. Instead be smart and turn fear into a tool for caution.?Use this Saturn and Taurus opposition to your benefit.?Let awareness of the importance of your safety and life direct you to demonstrate to the universe that you care about yourself and others and that you?ll take the necessary steps to create secure conditions that are as safe as possible.

How do you feel about how the media is portraying this storm? Do you think the sensationalist approach may be necessary to get people to wake up and pay attention, or is it over the top?

Do you think humanity has an appetite for seeing destruction, or the potential for destruction, as entertainment?~ let us know in the comments below.

Once the storm passes, obviously many will be looking to insurance and help from others financially to rebuild. Taurus loves to build things so find yourself a healthy Taurus willing to help if necessary, or channel that strong, Taurus energy yourself. It will be a good time to make sure you go after what you need, rather than wait. The astrological conditions coincide with this necessity. Get your batteries, candles and extra food in case the electricity goes out for a while.

Security is more than having batteries, flashlights and all the right gear. Security is about people and your environment. It is about our relationship to life in the world.

In today?s world so many of us live in cities, more than ever before. David Suzuki discussed in an interview how much the world has changed in the last 100 years. In 1900 there were only 16 cities in the world that had over 1 million people living in them. Everyone else on earth lived in rural areas. Therefore, the majority of people lived close to nature and understood its cycles and their relationship to it a century ago. People valued nature.

Today the world has over 100 cities with over a million people living in them and now there is a significant disconnect from the natural world. Where people once placed value on nature, now a larger part of civilization places value on the economy. Today, accumulating material possessions, proving self-worth and value through the brands and how much money one has and the things people can do because of it, reflects the shift in priorities, values and consciousness.

Nature is the foundation of our lives and always will be. It is a requirement to exist as humanity. It is the foundation of our physical reality. The economy, on the other hand, is a man-made construct that provides a continuous fluctuation of stability vs. instability. Although the financial system is embedded so tightly into our lives and we now believe it is a necessity, it is possible for humanity to exist without it.

Although all things are changing, and transforming at all times, and natures weather patterns can vary, the Sun rises every morning, and the Moon is full every month. Nature does have it?s regular cycles that provide us with a foundation of knowing our life patterns if we tune into these cycles.

Security includes people in your life. Do you know your neighbors? In a crisis do you think you would band together or become more divided with the strangers around you? Many people living in cities do not know who lives in the apartment or house next-door! Larger cities are also touted as potentially the worst places to be in a crisis where people vie only for themselves in a competitive environment of survival.

Cities are an economical construct where financially related materialism is embodied as the highest value. We see this demonstrated when people claw and trample their way through shopping centers to fill their baskets with all those plastic material possessions during peak shopping periods. We also see this demonstrated when a storm is on it?s way and people are emptying shelves. Dependency on what is available and offered by stores also factors into how our foundations are less about people and more about financially driven companies.

In smaller locals however, where communities are built on relationships and common themes, coming together with those you know is easier. Working together for solutions, rather than against each other may never be simple, but is eased when the common bond of humanity is more realized. This is an essential lesson. We need each other. We need other people in our lives when things get rough. Be the ray of sun and hope that lights up your environment.

Now though, all this disconnect has it?s benefit to our awareness. We see so many people now turning towards holistic wellness, and earth-based spirituality to reconnect our souls to the spirit of the earth. The disconnect puts it squarely in our faces, screaming at us to wake up! We are noting the importance to stop denying ourselves from putting our feet in the grass and becoming grounded again. We see the value of getting away from the city lights and staring up into the milky way in awe of what our souls have been missing. On a broader level, more people are being shown the larger negative consequences of holding the attitude that we have ?dominion over the earth?. It?s as if the message doesn?t sink in until it?s almost too late. The gift of this Full Moon is an awakening to the necessities of our lives connected to the earth in stronger harmony.

With Halloween so close, we are also within reach of the spirit realm with more acuity. It?s time to remember those we?ve loved and lost, and who have moved onto their own present outside our material world. Create a special place, light candles and speak from your heart to those who have moved on. It will be healing and bring you closer to spirit.

What?s your special Halloween ritual? Do you feel a closer connection to the spirit world and your ancestors at this time of year? ~ let us know in the comments.

Some people lock their doors, turn off their lights and hide away during Halloween, associating it with evil, even going so far as calling it ?The Devils Holiday?. For so many more though Halloween is a celebration and a time to let loose and have fun not taking life and death so seriously. Although death can certainly be scary, it also demands and forces us to think about our mortality and our spirituality, our purpose and our limitation of time.

The Underworld is ruled by Pluto, which rules Scorpio ? precisely where the Sun is now next to Saturn. So as mentioned earlier, there is fear surrounding this storm, and with it personal, inner transformation about priorities and relationship to the material world including financially, are heightened.

Did you know in ancient Egypt, the Bull was sacred? In Egypt the word ?Ka? represented Life Force, and Bull.

?Ancient Egyptians believed that upon death they would be asked two questions and their answers would determine whether they could continue their journey in the afterlife. The first question was, ?Did you bring joy?? The second was, ?Did you find joy?? ~ Leo Buscaglia

Osiris is a symbol of the descent into the underworld and resurrection, just as the phoenix too symbolizes the realm of Pluto (Hades) transforming into new life. With the descent though, comes the new appreciation and understanding of life. As Isis demonstrates the connection to the underworld and all that is unknown hidden behind the veil, we realize the world needs the other side to create deeper meaning to the life we know. Osiris is also associated with the constellation Orion, and has his eye on Taurus. All these cosmic symbols are doorways into the meaningfulness of a larger cosmic picture, our lineage of understanding the world, life and death through our ancestors reaching back thousands of years, and thus the spirit realm.

For those of you who find yourself feeling a bit depressed or melancholy during this Full Moon, ?getting outside, soaking up the rays of the sun in the day and the light of the moon at night, staring into the heavens will do your spirit wonders. Getting grounded and connected to nature will help you release the patterns of thinking you have about your own little world, and move you to see the grander scheme of the universe as a magical place of wonder.

If you feel inhibited and lack self confidence dressing up for Halloween and taking on the role of a character will transform your perspective. It will get you thinking about having fun and exploring your artistic side which is always liberating. It?s important to not take yourself too seriously. Just go have fun. If you can?t go out, at least do something in the spirit of Halloween to enjoy yourself and tune into the season.

This is a time to heal who you are through finding a deeper connection to spirituality. Many will find occult (hidden) themed subject spark curiosity. Watch films and read books on haunted castles, witches, vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, ouija boards and the like to get your mind traveling the realms of curiosity.

What?s your favorite Paranormal subject or Halloween theme? Are you afraid of occult themes, or do they provoke curiosity into life?s deeper mysteries? ~ let us know in the comments below.

Come back Monday (The Day of the Full Moon in Taurus) when we?ll have considerations for your sign.

For the Young at Heart ~ Happy Halloween.

Scientists deepen genetic understanding of MS

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Five scientists, including two from Simon Fraser University, have discovered that 30 per cent of our likelihood of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be explained by 475,806 genetic variants in our genome. Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) commonly screen these variants, looking for genetic links to diseases.

Corey Watson, a recent SFU doctoral graduate in biology, his thesis supervisor SFU biologist Felix Breden and three scientists in the United Kingdom have just had their findings published online in Scientific Reports. It's a sub-publication of the journal Nature.

An inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults. Canada has one of the highest MS rates in the world.

Watson and his colleagues recently helped quantify MS genetic susceptibility by taking a closer look at GWAS-identified variants in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region in 1,854 MS patients. The region has long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MS patients' variants were compared to those of 5,164 controls, people without MS.

They noted that eight percent of our 30-per-cent genetic susceptibility to MS is linked to small DNA variations on chromosome 6, which have also long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MHC encodes proteins that facilitate communication between certain cells in the immune system. Outside of the MHC, a good majority of genetic susceptibility can't be nailed down because current studies don't allow for all variants in our genome to be captured.

"Much of the liability is unaccounted for because current research methods don't enable us to fully interrogate our genome in the context of risk for MS or other diseases," says Watson.

The researchers believe that one place to look for additional genetic causes of MS may be in genes that have variants that are rare in the population. "The importance of rare gene variants in MS has been illustrated in two recent studies," notes Watson, now a postdoctoral researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

"But these variants, too, are generally poorly represented by genetic markers captured in GWAS, like the one our study was based on."

Simon Fraser University is Canada's top-ranked comprehensive university and one of the top 50 universities in the world under 50 years old. With campuses in Vancouver,

Burnaby and Surrey, B.C., SFU engages actively with the community in its research and teaching, delivers almost 150 programs to more than 30,000 students, and has more than 120,000 alumni in 130 countries.

Zynga's Bringing Farmville to Online Gambling

Zynga's Bringing Farmville to Online GamblingShortly after firing about 150 people, Zynga has even better news for investors. It's getting into a sure-thing moneymaker, online gambling.

Gamasutra said on Thursday that Zynga saw a decent bump in its stock price after revealing plans long hinted at. They're getting into a partnership with Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment, an Austrian online gaming operator. Plans include "a slots simulator based on [Zynga's] Farmville," says Gamasutra, and that it's just one step toward a bigger presence in gambling for Zynga.

Considering how many people just straight up don't come back to play a social game after the first time they try it, and that 90 percent don't last a month, this is probably a shrewd move. Still doesn't mean they make anything I wanna play.

>> i think that it is clearly a pattern of diry tricks, of intimidation, of suppression. those states that went with the voter i.d. laws, ending early voting , now tricks of sending mail and whether the victims, tamron, are democrat or republican they are wrong. i think that clearly when we see people's right to vote and exercising of their vote being tampered with, this is something that everyone should be outraged about. so, one of the thing that we're doing in florida , bishop curry who has a major church there in miami-dade and other organizations, 150 ministers have started what they call operation lemonade. we were given lemon sunday the day you can march your parishioners. they gave us a lemon and turning it to lemonade. we want people to come out and vote early because bishop curry said even though it's a lemon, make it lemonade. no method of suppression should stop us from voting in big numbers . new make the wonderful point that everyone should be concerned about this issue. this is not about party it's about getting people out to vote. and that is their right. you know it's interesting, you're going to florida , west palm beach . they already have some problems. 20,000 absentee ballots were not read by the tabulation machines. the problem has been remedied. here we go again. that's part of why you have suspicions from folks on both sides but especially from people who are democrats after what we've seen in different states where it seemed more minorities, more blacks, latinos targeted by some of these voter i.d. laws.

>> no doubt about it as well as the signs that isikoff piece showed, the billboards. the best thing could happen is if republicans came out and joined bishop curry and all of us over the weekend and showed a nonpartisan effort. clearly those of us that come out of the civil rights generation and saw people black and white suffered, died to get us the right to vote we won't take this lightly and they will have to do more than change some dates to stop us from bringing out big numbers vote. we don't tell people tomorrow or sunday or through the week who to vote for. people know some of us have taken a position. whoever they must vote for they must vote. not vote to they co-sign the ticket of taking away our voting reits and that's the priority of operation lemonade that bishop curry and others are doing.

>> everything kicks off at 7:00 a.m . tomorrow in miami. we'll watch your show tonight 6:00 eastern time . thank you reverend

MPs welcome Gordhan's debt measures - SouthAfrica.info

25 October 2012

MPs have welcomed Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's measures to clamp down on South Africa's public debt, following his tabling of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement in the National Assembly in Cape Town on Thursday.

African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) MP Steve Swart said Gordhan had "sent a very strong message to investors and credit rating agencies, that we are following a prudent fiscal path and that we are busy with debt consolidation to reduce our government debt in the long term".

Swart added that Gordhan had also sent out a strong message on tackling corruption and wasteful expenditure, while managing to stick closely to his Budget forecasts in February.

He described a cover article on South Africa in The Economist last week as "alarmist", and had failed to take into account President Jacob Zuma's discussion with business and labour earlier this month, or the fact that South Africa was on course from a fiscal perspective of debt consolidation.

"Yes, there are aspects of our domestic economy that are of a concern, such as the illegal strikes ... but I believe in the long run we are going to see a very conservative fiscal policy with a slightly looser monetary policy, which will stand us in good stead," Swart said.

Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Tim Harris welcomed the spending freeze, which he said would consolidate fiscal consolidation, which is something investors would be pleased to hear.

But he said that South Africa's deficit was expected to rise to 4.8% this year, which he said was double that of other emerging markets, while the country's debt ratio of 41% of gross domestic product (GDP) was significantly above other emerging markets, which averaged about 35% of GDP.

Harris added that the government needed to put more emphasis on insuring that reforms and plans that it had come up with - such as the youth wage subsidy - were put into action.

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) MP Mario Ambrosini said the middle class would suffer the most with sluggish growth, through higher electricity costs and taxes and higher food prices.

He said South Africa would only get out of its present rut if it addressed ways to increase productivity and developed a sustainable economic growth model that did not depend on subsidies.

US returns 4,000 archaeological relics to Mexico

(AP) ? More than 4,000 archaeological artifacts looted from Mexico and seized in the U.S. have been returned to Mexican authorities in what experts say is one of the largest such repatriations between the countries.

The items returned Thursday mostly date from before European explorers landed in North America and include items from hunter-gatherers in pre-Columbian northern Mexico, such as stones used to grind corn, statues, figurines and copper hatchets, said Pedro Sanchez, president of the National Archaeological Council of Mexico.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents seized the relics in El Paso, Phoenix, Chicago, Denver, San Diego and San Antonio, though most of the artifacts ? including items traced to a 2008 theft from a museum in Mexico ? turned up in Fort Stockton, a Texas town about 230 miles southeast of El Paso.

More than two dozen pieces of pottery were seized in Kalispell, Mont., where Homeland Security agents discovered that a consignor had paid Mexican Indians to loot items from burial sites deep in the Mexican Copper Canyon in Chihuahua, Mexico, authorities said.

Although most of the items turned over are arrowheads, several are of "incalculable archaeological value," Sanchez told The Associated Press. He said it was the biggest archaeological repatriation in terms of the number of items that the U.S has made to Mexico.

U.S. officials displayed the relics at the Mexican Consulate in El Paso before handing them over during a ceremony Thursday. The artifacts will eventually be taken to the National Institute of Anthropology and History in Mexico City, where they will be studied, cataloged and distributed to museums across Mexico.

Most of the items were uncovered during a string of seizures in West Texas in 2009, following a tip about relics illegally entering the U.S. at a border crossing in Presidio, Texas.

Homeland Security special agent Dennis Ulrich said authorities executing a search warrant in Fort Stockton found the largest portion of the cache. Further investigation revealed that the two men behind the smuggling were also involved in drug trafficking from Mexico to the U.S., he said.

Sanchez said some of the relics found in Fort Stockton were stolen from a private collection at the Cuatro Cienagas museum in the Mexican state of Coahuila.

The items also include arrows, hunting bows and even extremely well conserved textile items such as sandals and pieces of baskets.
