Australian Price Gouging Inquiry Targets Apple, Microsoft And Others

Apple Retail Store - SydneyGetting a new laptop or buying a new license for an operating system is often cheaper in the U.S. than in most other countries. Europeans, for example, are used to paying a hefty premium for Apple products and the situation is similar in Australia, where the cheapest MacBook Air currently costs about 15% more than in the United States. Now, however, the Australian government is starting a parliamentary inquiry into these pricing schemes. According to Australia's Sydney Morning Herald, the politicians behind this inquiry hope that calling these companies out publicly will result in prices dropping.

Google TV YouTube app updated for better recommendations, search and sharing

It only makes sense that the Google TV initiative to increase personalization would extend to videos served up from its YouTube site, and now the official app has been updated to do just that. The new version brings recommendations meant to pull gems you might like out of the ever growing pile of content available, as well as a way to search between the new YouTube channels on your TV. Also users should notice improved video quality since the app will automatically try to play content at the best available resolution from the start, and if they find something interesting, it now supports +1 sharing to Google+. The new app is already live on Google Play, compatible devices should be pointed that way for the new experience.

nfavor1_wide.jpg
The Stars of Bravo's New Show Are Bringing Glamour to the Big Apple Bravo's 2012 line-up just got all the more fashionable, as the network prepares to unveil a new docu-series tentatively called Decades. The show will follow renowned boutique owners Christos Garkinos and Cameron Silver as they take viewers inside the exclusive and glamorous world of vintage couture filled with Givenchy, Balenciaga and Chanel.

While their boutique, also named "Decades," is situated in Hollywood, Christos and Cameron will be headed back to New York on April 26-28 for a Prada/Schiaparelli-inspired trunk show in honor of the upcoming Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and to celebrate the launch of the Decades for Rent the Runway collection. The boutique owners took time out of their busy schedules to speak to In Touch about the upcoming show and series.

?Our store mantra has always been to encourage people to 'dress up!'" Cameron said. "At our upcoming New York event with Rent the Runway, we will have the perfect clothing and accessories to get people into the social-scene spirit ? whether you?re shopping for the Met gala or looking for a prom dress, we?ve got it all. We love New York! We can?t wait to bring the best of Decades to the Big Apple."

As for what will make the Decades show different than other fashion-inspired series, Cameron tells viewers to get their pencils ready. "It?s not only totally entertaining, but also truly informative. So for any fashion fan, it will be like Fashion 101 ? but unlike school, you?ll be giggling your way through it!?

5 Reasons Why Nokia Lost Its Handset Sales Lead and Got Downgraded to ?Junk?

In the mobile industry, a 14-year lead is undoubtedly impressive. But Nokia's lead has gradually declined in the past few years, for a number of reasons. Here's what Nokia did wrong -- or alternatively, what Samsung did right -- that led to one handset company's rise over the other.

Jennie Garth to Play Nancy Grace in a Lifetime Movie?

Nancy Grace sure has had an interesting life. And now Jennie Garth is playing her alter ego in a Lifetime movie based on the legal analyst's 2009 best-selling novel, The Eleventh Victim. Garth will play Hailey Dean, a young assistant D.A. who prosecutes a case against her fiance's killer. And then -- oh no! -- he targets her when he gets out of jail. Sounds very dramatic and Lifetime-esque, doesn't it?

Sprint adds 263,000 subscribers, posts $255 million operating loss, watches LTE start to flicker on

Sprint

Sprint this morning announced its Q1 2012 earnings. The big strokes are that it added 263,000 postpaid subscribers but posted a $255 million operating loss. (A little less than half of that was for in operating costs for its new "Network Vision" strategy. You have to spend money to make money.)

Sprint now boasts more than 56 million customers (32.8 million postpaid, and 15.3 million prepaid. Churn was up slightly at 2 percent.

And, yes, Sprint sold some iPhones -- some 1.5 million.

What we're really interested in, of course, is Sprint's LTE rollout. It's still set to have six LTE cities running by  mid-year, and more than 12,000 sites (different than citites) by the end of the year.

MetroPCS announces Q1 2012 results: total revenues up, new subscriber growth shrinks

Regional network MetroPCS has announced total revenues of approximately $1.3 billion for Q1 2012, up from $1.2 bilion in the last quarter and up seven percent from the same period in 2011. Users on contract now total 9.5 million, with 16 percent of them making the move across to a smartphone. Net income has, however, dropped 63 percent since Q1 2011, with cost per user up 16 percent compared the same period last year. MetroPCS puts down to "retention expense" and the roll-out of its 4G network. The fifth biggest US carrier added over 131,000 new subscribers, but growth continues to slide -- it's down from 190,000 in Q4 2012. On the positive side, users are creeping onto the carrier's 4G network, with 580,000 LTE subscribers nowmaking up six percent of its total subscription base -- regardless of those creeping costs for unlimited data.

Nokia reportedly delays Lumia 900 release in the UK, cites high US demand (update)

Image

Despite remaining mum on how many Lumia 900s it's moved in the US, Nokia has been raving about how it's trying to keep up with demand for the flagship Windows Phone device. Consider us unsurprised, then, that the company has apparently delayed the phone's previous April 27th release date in the UK to "around May 14th," citing a need to keep the device stocked in the States. The news comes from V3.co.uk, which got the information from a Nokia spokesperson referring specifically to retailer Phones 4u. Hit up the links below if you'd like to catch the full spiel, and why not check out our review of a second time to solidify your decision while you wait.

Update: And just like that, Phones 4u has officially confirmed the May 14th release date and UD demand. The carrier will indeed be the first to carry the device when it launches, and notably, folks who pre-ordered early will also receive a free pair of Nokia Purity by Monster in-ear headphones -- this, on top of the already bundled-for-free Play 360 wireless speaker. You'll find all the details in the press release after the break and at the more coverage link below.
