Lower Foreclosure Deeds in August this Year - Boston Real Estate

In Massachusetts 566 foreclosures were completed in August, which is the lowest level recorded in 2012 thus far?according to The Warren Group. August is also the 3rd consecutive month in which we saw a year-over-year decrease in foreclosure deeds. August also boats the lower number of foreclosure completions since February 2011. Between August 2011 and August 2012 foreclosure deeds dropped by 40% from 947 to 566.

Banker & Tradesman Editor, Cory S. Hopkins, said, ?Fewer foreclosures were completed in recent months, which may indicate a greater effort from lenders to find loan alternatives. As banks continue to return to more normal foreclosure procedures and the housing market follows the same path, we are likely to see more good news in coming months.?

On the other hand, petitions increased a bit between August 2011 and August 2012 from 1,397 to 1,456?a 4.2% increase. Each month thus far petitions have increased, with the exception of July in which starts dropped year-over-year by 16.8%. So far in 2012, 12,079 foreclosure petitions have been initiated?an increase of 46% from 2011?s 8,253 filed during this same length of time.

According to The Warren Group, auction announcements also decreased in August by 18%?from 1,329 in August of 2011 to 1,084 in August 2012. Auction announcements from January through August of this year have declined 9.2% when compared with last year?s numbers during the same stretch of time.

What do you think this means for Boston real estate? Do you think foreclosures will continue to decrease?

'Fountain of youth' technique rejuvenates aging stem cells

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

A new method of growing cardiac tissue is teaching old stem cells new tricks. The discovery, which transforms aged stem cells into cells that function like much younger ones, may one day enable scientists to grow cardiac patches for damaged or diseased hearts from a patient's own stem cells?no matter what age the patient?while avoiding the threat of rejection.

Stem cell therapies involving donated bone marrow stem cells run the risk of patient rejection in a portion of the population, argues Milica Radisic, Canada Research Chair in Functional Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering (IBBME) and Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto.

One method of avoiding the risk of rejection has been to use cells derived from a patient's own body. But until now, clinical trials of this kind of therapy using elderly patients' own cells have not been a viable option, since aged cells tend not to function as well as cells from young patients.

"If you want to treat these people with their own cells, how do you do this?"

It's a problem that Radisic and her co-researcher, Dr. Ren-Ke Li, think they might have an answer for: by creating the conditions for a 'fountain of youth' reaction within a tissue culture.

Li holds the Canada Research Chair in Cardiac Regeneration and is a Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, cross-appointed to IBBME. He is also a Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute.

Radisic and Li first create a "micro-environment" that allows heart tissue to grow, with stem cells donated from elderly patients at the Toronto General Hospital.

The cell cultures are then infused with a combination of growth factors?common factors that cause blood vessel growth and cell proliferation?positioned in such a way within the porous scaffolding that the cells are able to be stimulated by these factors.

Dr. Li and his team then tracked the molecular changes in the tissue patch cells. "We saw certain aging factors turned off," states Li, citing the levels of two molecules in particular, p16 and RGN, which effectively turned back the clock in the cells, returning them to robust and healthy states.

"It's very exciting research," says Radisic, who was named one of the top innovators under 35 by MIT in 2008 and winner of the 2012 Young Engineers Canada award.

Li and Radisic hope to continue their goal to create the most effective environment in which cells from older patients can be given new life. "We can create much better tissues which can then be used to repair defects such as aneurysms," Li says, as well as repairing damage caused by heart attacks.

The study was recently released in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the top journal in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

After Rondo ejected, Nets beat Celtics 95-83

BOSTON (AP) ? Doc Rivers wants the Boston Celtics to be tough ? not violent.

The message came too late for Rajon Rondo.

The Celtics point guard was ejected from Wednesday night's game against the Nets when he retaliated for a hard foul against Kevin Garnett by shoving Brooklyn forward Kris Humphries into the courtside seats. Rondo, Humphries and Nets forward Gerald Wallace were ejected, and Brooklyn held on to win 95-83.

"All that stuff, that's not toughness," Rivers told reporters, calling his team soft. "That foul was a hard foul. It was an unnecessary foul. The play was over and then he pushed him down in the air. But I think that's what they think of us: They think they can push you around."

Joe Johnson scored 18 points and Andray Blatche had 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Nets opened up a 21-point, first-half lead and took advantage of the loss of the Celtics' All-Star to win for the ninth time in 11 games.

Garnett had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Paul Pierce added 14 points for Boston. Rondo had three assists before he was kicked out, ending his streak at 37 games with double-digits ? tied for second-longest in NBA history.

The Nets led by eight after one quarter and scored 19 of the first 25 points in the second to make it 47-26. Boston cut the deficit to 14 points and trailed by 16 when Garnett took an off-balance jumper from the right baseline and Humphries leveraged him to the floor with his left arm.

Rondo trailed the play with a two-handed shove that sent Humphries into the courtside seats.

"Kevin could have gotten hurt. He's in the air. He took a bad fall. And so Rondo saw that and probably reacted, and over-reacted, obviously," Rivers said. "I can't get in anybody's head. But at that point we're getting our tails kicked and we're probably frustrated."

Wallace soon entered the fray by shoving Garnett. Nets point guard Deron Williams said Humphries, who did not speak to reporters after the game, had scratches on his head and neck.

After the game, Humphries posted a picture of his scratched left shoulder with the comment: "Anyone know where I can quick get a Tetnis shot in Boston?"

While the rest of the players remained by their benches, coaches and officials tried to break up the skirmish.

"I think guys just try to defend themselves," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "I think the league should really take that into account. Because I don't know if guys can just walk away all the time. They've got to kind of protect themselves."

The referees went to the scorer's table to watch the incident on replay, and their verdict was announced over the public address system: Two technical fouls for Humphries, one for Wallace ? his second of the game, ending his night ? and one for Garnett.

Rondo was simply ejected.

"Rondo initiated everything that proceeded after the foul," crew chief James Capers said in a pool report provided to reporters. "And when he and Humphries go into the stands, they are involved in a fight. Fighting is an automatic ejection."

Rondo left the Celtics locker room before it was opened to reporters, and was unavailable for comment.

"We all back each other," Garnett said. "We take a lot of pride in putting on this jersey. I know I do. This ain't the Girl Scouts or the Boy Scouts. That's what it is. It's the NBA. You've got to get used to it."

When the free throws were done, Boston trailed 51-38, and the Celtics never got closer than nine points after that.

Rondo has had a history of petulance, including a one-game suspension during the opening round of last year's playoff series against Atlanta after he chest-bumped referee Marc Davis while complaining about a call in the final minute of a Boston loss.

During the 2011-12 regular season, he was suspended for two games for throwing a ball at an official.

"Usually he goes after the refs," Rivers said. "This was another guy, so this was better."

He has also come under criticism for selfishness this season for re-entering a 20-point loss to Detroit in the fourth quarter to keep his streak alive.

Notes: Rondo's streak of 10 or more assists dated to March 11 of last season. That ties John Stockton for second-longest in NBA history. Magic Johnson holds the record at 46 consecutive games in the 1983-84 season. ... U.S. Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman was in attendance. ... Rivers said Johnson is one of his best friends. The two had dinner together on Tuesday night. ... Garnett tied John Havlicek for 18th on the NBA career list with 1,270 games played. ... Pierce passed Bob Pettit for 13th on the NBA's all-time list for free throws made with 6,183. ... Celtics F Jeff Green sprained his right knee in the second half but was able to return. Boston F Chris Wilcox left the game due to illness. ... The teams next meet on Christmas Day in Brooklyn. ... The Nets were playing their third game in four days.

?The Myth of American Meritocracy: How corrupt are Ivy League ...

There is a new and stimulating piece by Ron Unz, in The American Conservative.? The article covers plenty of ground, but I took away two main points.? The first is that there is massive and quite unjustified bias against Asian and Asian-American students in the U.S. admissions process.? Yes, I already thought that but it turns out it is much worse than I had thought.? Yet many people support this aspect of our current admissions systems, either directly or indirectly.

The second point is the claim that Jewish academic achievement in America is collapsing at the top end, in relative terms at least.

For reasons which are possibly irrational on my end, but perhaps not totally irrational, I am not entirely comfortable with the religious and ethnic and racial ?counting? methods applied in this piece (blame me for mood affiliation if you wish).? Still, it is an interesting read and after some internal debate I thought I would pass it along, albeit with caveats.

In any case, the link to the article is here.

Romney adviser brags about losing poor, minority voters?

Mitt Romney can take some solace in his devastating loss on Nov. 6: at least he won the voters who really count.

That's the thesis anyway of top adviser Stuart Stevens, who penned an op-ed in the Washington Post on Wednesday arguing that by winning wealthier and whiter voters, Romney secured the moral victory over Obama.

"On Nov. 6, Mitt Romney carried the majority of every economic group except those with less than $50,000 a year in household income," Stevens wrote. "That means he carried the majority of middle-class voters. While John McCain lost white voters under 30 by 10 points, Romney won those voters by seven points, a 17-point shift."

According to Stevens, "The Republican Party has problems, but as we go forward, let's remember that any party that captures the majority of the middle class must be doing something right." As a result, "Republican ideals -- Mitt Romney -- carried the day."

The argument that poorer voters are inherently inferior seems to undercut the campaign's central message over the last two years: that Romney's top concern was providing jobs for the jobless. The unemployed Americans Romney highlighted in ads, speeches and photo-ops make under $50,000 a year almost by definition and campaign videos like the one below are jarring next to Stevens' latest piece.

Stevens notably never mentioned jobs and unemployment in his op-ed, instead focusing on how Romney championed "the moral case for free enterprise and conservative economics."

Unfortunately for Romney, poor and minority votes counted just the same as the allegedly superior votes Stevens favored. The result was an electoral college blowout for the president powered by strong turnout and margins among young voters, Latinos, African Americans, and women.

But Stevens had an explanation for that, too. Obama was "a charismatic African American president with a billion dollars, no primary and a media that often felt morally conflicted about being critical. How easy is that to replicate?"

Five Best Remedies For Discharge During Early Pregnancy One of the best ways to get a buzz of pregnancy news is when you see that you have white discharge during your missed period days. This means that you need to get yourself checked to see if you are carrying. During pregnancy a lot of hormonal changes occur and this happens to be one among them and an early indicator.

There can be various reasons responsible for discharge during early pregnancy. The discharge is given out when the uterus is getting attached by an egg, when the uterus is trying to grow in its shape just to fit the embryo right or any other hormonal changes. If this discharge is followed by various other factors like itching or burning sensation, then it means that this is due to viral infection.

Sometimes ectopic pregnancy might also cause discharge. Hence all these conditions can turn out into serious issue if not taken care at the right time.?Here are the five best remedies for discharge during early pregnancy:

Brief exercise immediately enhances memory: Results apply to older adults both with and without cognitive deficits

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A short burst of moderate exercise enhances the consolidation of memories in both healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment, scientists with UC Irvine's Center for the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory have discovered.

Most research has focused on the benefits of a long-term exercise program on overall health and cognitive function with age. But the UCI work is the first to examine the immediate effects of a brief bout of exercise on memory.

In their study, post-doctoral researcher Sabrina Segal and neurobiologists Carl Cotman and Lawrence Cahill had people 50 to 85 years old with and without memory deficits view pleasant images -- such as photos of nature and animals -- and then exercise on a stationary bicycle for six minutes at 70 percent of their maximum capacity immediately afterward.

One hour later, the participants were given a surprise recall test on the previously viewed images. Results showed a striking enhancement of memory by exercise in both the healthy and cognitively impaired adults, compared with subjects who did not ride the bike.

"We found that a single, short instance of moderately intense exercise particularly improved memory in individuals with memory deficits," Segal said. "Because of its implications and the need to better understand the mechanism by which exercise may enhance memory, we're following up this study with an investigation of potential underlying biological factors."

She believes the improved memory may be related to the exercise-induced release of norepinephrine, a chemical messenger in the brain known to play a strong role in memory modulation. This hypothesis is based on previous work demonstrating that increasing norepinephrine through pharmacological manipulation sharpens memory and that blocking norepinephrine impairs memory.

In the more recent research, Segal and her colleagues discovered that levels of salivary alpha amylase, a biomarker that reflects norepinephrine activity in the brain, significantly increased in participants after exercise. This correlation was especially strong in people with memory impairment.

"The current findings offer a natural and relatively safe alternative to pharmacological interventions for memory enhancement in healthy older individuals as well as those who suffer from cognitive deficits," Segal noted. "With a growing population of the aged, the need for improvement of quality of life and prevention of mental decline is more important than ever before."

Study results appear in the November issue (Volume 32, Number 4) of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. UCI's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and the National Institute of Mental Health (grant number 575082), a division of the National Institutes of Health, supported the research.

Oil prices fall as Israel-Hamas truce holds

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell Monday as a truce between Israel and the militant group Hamas that stopped fighting in the Gaza Strip appeared to hold despite a confrontation late last week.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 33 cents to $87.95 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Friday, the contract rose 90 cents to close at $88.28 a barrel on the Nymex after Israeli troops fired on crowds in Gaza surging toward a border fence, killing one Palestinian.

Prior to the shooting, oil prices had been falling, thanks mostly to optimism that the cease-fire agreement between the two sides would prevent a broader conflict in the region that could disrupt crude supplies. The truce was struck last Wednesday to end to an eight-day Israeli offensive against Gaza militants who had fired rockets into Israel, but remains fragile.

Traders were also keeping a close eye on developments in Egypt, said independent oil analyst Stephen Schork. Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on Sunday moved to grant himself near-absolute power, sparking street clashes between his supporters and opponents.

Brent, which is used to set prices for many international varieties of oil, fell 33 cents to $111.05 a barrel.

Other futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Wholesale gasoline lost 0.2 cent to $2.719 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 5 cents to $3.851 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil was unchanged at $3.086 a gallon.

I've seen others here use these, both shop made and commercial versions. My last set finally got tired and went to that big burn pile in the sky. When making a new batch I thought I'd make enough to take dad a set. I take a piece of hardwood stock about 1-1/2" square and 8-1/4" long and rip it at a 45* angle on the bandsaw to create two long triangle shaped block. I glue these to a scrap of 1/4" BB ply.

Overall length is just shy of 7". The important dimension is the "tail" that should be at least 4-1/2" long so that you can clamp without your clamps running into each other.

German Pirates Party struggles to define policy and stay afloat

BOCHUM, Germany (Reuters) - Germany's fast-sinking Pirates Party struggled to overcome infighting at a congress that ended on Sunday and chart a course for next year's federal elections that may see it cast into political oblivion as swiftly as it arrived.

Support for the Pirates, who surprisingly won seats in four states over the past year, has shrunk to around a quarter of its peak. Their demise could help the centre left recover enough votes to oust conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The party surged to 13 percent support in April but is now under 5 percent, the threshold needed for it to enter parliament, after it has failed to define policy goals and board have members quarreled in public.

Nearly 2,000 Pirates delegates gathered in the western industrial city of Bochum at the weekend to try to put their differences behind them and flesh out their thin party program but agreed just a handful of the some 700 proposals.

"We're still a young party, everything is up in the air," said party member Rolf Schuemer, a 58-year-old teacher and cabaret artist, wearing the Pirates' trademark color orange.

Indeed, Schuemer said it remained to be seen whether they could ever agree policies beyond their original aims of more direct democracy, civil rights, and Internet freedom.

The Pirates initially attracted voters from across the political spectrum who were frustrated with traditional politics and their inability to influence it, albeit mainly from the left, as well as many who previously did not vote at all.

But many attracted to the Pirates have since turned away.

After the Pirates' initial success, their survival as a political force looks threatened. "It's still unclear if they will manage to make the 5 percent hurdle at the Bundestag elections," said Klaus-Peter Schoeppner of the Emnid polling institute.

Manfred Guellner, director of the Forsa polling institute, said voters who once leaned to the Pirates were likely to abstain, and some would go to other parties: "They still have a chance as frustration with the other parties remains."

VAGUE POLICY COURSE

The Pirates Party emerged in Sweden six years ago to campaign for free downloads for personal use. When the German chapter was founded months later, it was seen as a splinter group for computer nerds.

The Pirates are still led by their technology-savvy core, but they are trying to broaden their agenda to move beyond their traditional answer of "We don't have an opinion on that yet".

But their attempt at direct democracy, where each member has a right to propose and vote on policy, is unwieldy. On the table for debate in Bochum were some 700 motions on everything from the economy to foreign policy.

Even the mode of debate has to be voted on by the party's grassroot members. Members waited in queues 10 meters long to speak. Sitting hunched over laptops, sipping beer and soft drink, the Pirates debated for hours for just a few motions.

"I would have hoped for more concrete proposals, but at least we have a good roadmap now," said one 44-year-old Pirate and computer scientist, draped in a rainbow party flag.

"I'm happy we managed to agree anything because we have gained so many new members it's difficult to get consensus."

The number of members has nearly tripled to around 34,000 in a year, making it the largest party that is not represented in the Bundestag and the seventh largest party overall.

Membership however does not necessarily reflect popularity, and the Pirates had been polling third place for much of this year, ahead of all the other smaller parties including the Greens. But the rate of new members joining is slowing.

The Pirates agreed a broad-brushed economic vision aiming to provide all citizens a "fair participation" in the country's wealth. The motions agreed were mostly leftward leaning.

The party for example committed to examining the option of a basic income, a system of social security that regularly provides each citizen with a sum of money unconditionally.

The Pirates also agreed neither to pursue the aim of full employment nor to follow policy oriented solely towards growth.

LEARNING CURVE

Pirate leader Bernd Schloemer told Reuters the economic policies had most in common with the Greens, Germany's erstwhile anti-establishment party that has now gone mainstream, but there were also liberal elements.

The Pirates hope a focus on policy, after months of public infighting on the board, will restore their tarnished image.

"It's time for us to realize we want to do politics together, without insulting, disrespecting or ignoring one another," Schloemer said.

Party leaders say they have had a steep learning curve and are in the process of becoming more professional after being belittled in German media reports for their chaotic start.

The Pirates caught other parties by surprise in September last year, gaining nearly 9 percent of the vote for Berlin's city assembly. It went on to win seats in the state assemblies of Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia.

But the latest poll for Lower Saxony, which holds elections in January, puts the Pirates on just 3 percent. In Hesse and Bavaria, which hold votes later in the year, it is also under the 5 percent threshold.

Party member Schuemer said he wanted to focus on how different the Pirates were to anything that came before them. "It is an exciting experiment, with an uncertain outcome."

(AP) ? Jarvis Landry helped LSU keep an SEC championship within reach.

Landry made a spectacular, reaching, one-handed touchdown catch and the eighth-ranked Tigers held on for a 20-13 win over Arkansas on Friday.

Zach Mettenberger passed for 217 yards and hooked up with Landry for the play of the day with 1:12 left in the first half to put LSU up 10-0. The Tigers (10-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) reached double-digit wins for the sixth time in eight seasons under coach Les Miles.

LSU must now hope for an Alabama loss to Auburn and Texas A&M victory on Saturday in order to reach next weekend's SEC championship game. Even without a division crown, the Tigers could still get an at-large bid to the BCS.

Tyler Wilson was 31 of 52 passing for the Razorbacks (4-8, 2-6), whose fall from preseason top 10 is now complete. The senior set the school record for career passing yards in the loss.

Arkansas' Cobi Hamilton set the school record for receptions in a career with 175.

The Tigers took at 17-3 lead early in the second quarter after a 1-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Hill, who finished with 77 yards rushing on 18 carries. The touchdown followed an 86-yard kickoff return by Michael Ford to the Arkansas 9.

It also appeared to be the clincher for LSU against a Razorbacks team that struggled mightily in its first season following the April firing of former coach Bobby Petrino. Arkansas was 21-5 the last two seasons and entered the season with SEC and national championship expectations, but it was eliminated from the bowl picture following last week's loss at Mississippi State.

The Razorbacks, however, rallied behind the record-setting combination of Wilson and Hamilton.

Wilson passed former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallet's mark of 7,493 yards passing in the second quarter, finishing with 359 yards in the game and 7,765 yards for his career, and his 28-yard touchdown pass to freshman Mekale McKay in the third quarter closed the LSU lead to 17-10.

After forcing a Tigers' punt, the Razorbacks used a key fourth-and-1 conversion to set up another scoring opportunity. Wilson found Jonathan Williams for a 37-yard completion on the fourth down at midfield, helping to set up a second-and-goal at the LSU 1.

Arkansas was unable, however, to find the end zone on its next two plays. Interim coach John L. Smith then elected to kick a 17-yard field goal, which backup kicker John Henson converted to close the Tigers' lead to 17-13.

The Razorbacks couldn't find the end zone again, bringing a likely end to the Arkansas career of Smith ? who was signed to a 10-month contract following Petrino's firing. The Razorbacks had one final chance in the closing seconds, but Wilson's second-down attempt from the LSU 18 was over the head of McKay.

LSU's final score came on a 27-yard field goal by Drew Alleman with 1:26 remaining, giving it a 20-13 lead. The score came after a key third-down completion from Mettenberger to Odell Beckham, who finished with eight catches for 112 yards.

The Tigers led 10-0 at halftime in their first game in Fayetteville since 1992. They did so despite gaining the same 165 yards of total offense as the Razorbacks, whose season-long series of miscues continued in the half.

Arkansas, next to last in the SEC in red-zone offense, squandered three scoring opportunities in the half. Dennis Johnson fumbled near the LSU goal line on the game's opening drive, and kicker Zach Hocker misfired on a pair of field goal attempts before being benched in favor of Henson in the second half.

LSU's first touchdown came late in the first half when Mettenberger found Landry in the back of the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown. Landry had to reach back over his wrong shoulder to stretch out and snare the ball with his right hand, landing well in bounds.

Hamilton finished with 10 catches for 98 yards in his final game at Arkansas, finishing his career with 175 catches. His record broke the former mark of 168 catches, set last year by Minnesota Vikings' rookie Jarius Wright.

LSU was outgained 462-306 by the Razorbacks.

The Source of Growth and Creativity | Self improvement tips

Bare attention (to objects, people and circumstances) is what brings order in this world and in your personal world. If you know how to move your attention without the involvement of mind, positive creation happens as a result. Attention is literally a life response whereas mind is reaction out of memory and reaffirmation of the past. Attention is not same as thinking mind but it constitutes pure awareness moving itself through different objects without creating friction.

I am stating below some examples as to how life responds to the power of attention. Here?s one:

One small business owner decided to give attention to his accounts, balanced eight months of back bank statements, and miraculously received $5000 from nowhere the next day.

The key is attention without interpretation of the situation. A mere attention and intention to improve is sufficient.

If you bring your personal or business accounts fully and accurately up to date, you?ll be able to watch the money flow to you!

Money is not the only thing that responds to attention. So do ordinary objects and things. Consider this example:

A businessperson was unable to make any substantial sales. He was told that he should give attention to and evaluate his remaining current stocks, and then make a full effort to sell them off. After making an effort of selling but a few of the minimal stocks, an order arrived equal to six months of normal sales!

We have often seen this phenomenon where a business owner concerned by low sales or cash made the effort to sell off remaining unsold stocks, and life responded by bringing more sales. This is a powerful example of the power of attention to objects and things.

One way we give attention is by adopting the personal value of maximizing the way you use your current resources, such as money, materials, and time. Here?s an example of how one manufacturer applied the value of maximum utilization of a limited resource, which resulted in a very favorable situation for the company:

?In the manufacture of welding electrodes, Low Carbon Ferro Manganese is one of the main raw materials. The manufacturer who was supplying us suddenly informed that their plant is shut down for maintenance and that there will not be any supply from them for the next two months. It is an expensive material so the stock holding was minimum. There are only very few manufacturers of this item and they are all located at far away places. We had little time to arrange supply from other sources. The stock on hand was sufficient for 5 days of production only. We decided that not a particle of LCF should be wasted and alerted all the workers to be extra careful. The shop floor was swept thoroughly and all the spilled material were collected, screened and used. We provided attention to what could immediately be attended. Coincidentally, within two days, a Managing Director of a company manufacturing LCF in Orissa (which is about 1300 kilometers away from Pondicherry) visited our unit; over the phone (from Pondicherry) he instructed his plant to dispatch material to us. From the previous supplier we were buying the material against payment. Where as this company offered us a credit of 30 days. We did not negotiate any terms with them. They themselves agreed to supply at the same price. We were frank in telling them the precarious situation we were in. In spite of knowing our weak situation, they did not take any undue advantage. We are continuing with them.?

Moral is they didn?t wasted the material further and alerted all the workers to be extra careful. The shop floor was swept thoroughly and all the spilled material were collected, screened and used. They provided attention to what could be immediately attended. Moral is mere attentions to a situation without being caught up in its interpretation brings order into it. One need not worry, anxiety (using mind) but need to attend to immediate things including the people and objects and the universe arranges rest of the trappings to bring in the harmony into the area of attention.

Here?s a closely related example of the power of attention to things through the application of the value of maximum utilization, and life response:

X, the proprietor of a company, engaged Y as his consultant to improve his business. Y, the consultant, noticed a machine, which X deemed not useful to his present business, kept in a sorry state. Y requested X to repair and repaint it and keep it ready for production. X laughed and said, ?This machine

is idle for last many years without any order. I can not spend money on it. As soon as I get orders, I will repair and repaint the machine.? Y thought X was looking at things in the wrong way.

Y told X, ?If you keep machine ready for production and if you genuinely wish that this machine should yield profits, you will get orders. Life will favorably respond.?

X followed Y?s suggestion. After a day or two, X?s cousin, an engineer, came to his factory. The newly painted machine gained his attention. He took interest in the machine. He told X that he was interested in starting a new factory. If X could give the machine to him, he could earn profit from the first month onwards and a share of the income would go to X. An agreement was struck and the machine became a cash cow.

Moral is begin with trust that in the end everything will be organized and take your first step forward in the trust that the universe will arrange the trapping, your job is to attend the immediate objects, people and rest will follow on its own timing. In this case they attended a machine deemed not useful to his present business.

So all sorts of things respond to attention; animate and inanimate!

One final example will show how the power of attention is tied in to organizing things one level higher than it is currently organized.

A company had just launched a new product, yet did not yet have any sales on the product, despite considerable effort. One day the manager decided to go through the operations manual to update it to the latest information, including procedures related to the new product. He did this late in the work day. Early the very next morning he saw the first order for the product come in through the company?s web site.

Finally, let?s not forget to mention that people also, of course, respond to attention.

Mind creates friction, attention creates movement. If you experience movement without friction, its attention and not the mind and you can assume that you are in a creative state. We invite restlessness through preconceived ideas about the state of reality. Creativity begins when you can stabilize in a chaotic environment looking at it as an ever expanding life rather than mere problems; all the chaos is a life itself expanding to create new bridges where there are none. As a result, trust takes over fear and panic. New things or events or people are seen as opportunities to organize the life one step up. It is through chaos that the new order is borne, so chaos need not be seen as something to fear about but life itself stretching the limits to organize one step further. A relaxed attitude takes over the panic and fear.

Attention itself brings in the order when used wisely in a trusting manner. Things are disorganized on account of lack of attention and ignorance of it?s values.

Attention brings in the order. Place your attention in the areas where you seek improvements, hang out loosely expecting to improve the area, rest will follow. Key is identify the area, focus loosely and intend the desired result.

Seek with the attitude (state of existence) that you are already fulfilled and perfect in areas where you seek improvements, the acting and attitude of the perfection at every step itself consolidates into the ultimate end perfection. Move yourself consciously attending whatever needs to be attended here and now.

You trust and move one step toward unknown and simultaneously unknown moves one step towards you bridging the gap between harmony and disharmony. Your attention itself is your one step towards the unknown and if you consistently moves your attention in the desired direction with the intention to improve the life, unknown is moving towards you simultaneous bringing in all the necessary elements to bring harmony into your life.

Universe responds not to just fulfill your individual whims and fancies but to bring in greater order for greater good.

There is always a response to attention since it has capacity for positive movement where has mind has fixed notions which restricts movement.

Attention enables movement, whereas beliefs blocks movement.

Out There: Births of Stars Declining Sharply, Astronomers Say

It?s evening in the universe.

The stars we have are dying, and we?re not making new ones the way we used to. A group of British and American astronomers recently reported that the birthrate of stars in the universe has declined precipitously and continuously over the last 11 billion years.

The universe today is only producing stars one-thirtieth as fast as it was at its peak in the lusty primordial days when protogalaxies, all gas and spume, were bouncing around like pups in a closet, colliding and merging, popping with blazing bright new stars.

In a news release issued by the Royal Astronomical Society, the astronomer David Sobral of Leiden University in the Netherlands said, ?You might say that the universe has been suffering from a long, serious crisis: cosmic G.D.P. output is now only 3 percent of what it used to be at the peak in star production.? Dr. Sobral and his colleagues published their paper in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

They calculated that the current consolidation rate of ?starstuff? into stars amounts to about a half a trillion tons per year per cubic light-year. The Sun is about 2,000 trillion trillion tons.

In a fundamental sense, this cosmic fatigue is not really new. Other surveys, including one led by the aptly named Alan Heavens of the University of Edinburgh a few years ago, have come to similar conclusions. But one detail of this new study hit me.

Dr. Sobral and his colleagues said that if this decline in breeding goes on, it means the universe has already made 95 percent of the star mass that it will ever make. As eternity goes on ? and on and on ? the cosmos, like Palm Springs, will be dominated by older and older stars.

There is no cause for immediate alarm. Stars live for millions or billions of years, depending on their masses; the biggest burn out quickly, while the smaller ones can limp on as red dwarfs for a trillion years or more. The Sun, a middle-size and middle-aged star, has another 5 billion years or so to go.

Our own Milky Way galaxy, moreover, is still busily hatching stars out of dense gas clouds in places like the Eagle Nebula, home of the famous Pillars of Creation. If you ever agonized about missing out on Paris in the 1920s or Italy in the Renaissance, at least you can take comfort that we live in the Golden Age of the Milky Way.

To paraphrase Bob Dylan, it?s not dark yet, but it?s getting there.

The news brought me back to the darkening days of November in the Catskills, where I used to live. When the woods suddenly become lighter and more transparent because branches are bare, the sun slants off silvery tree trunks. The ground is luminous, carpeted with red and gold leaves that are about to be buried in snow.

The notion that 95 percent of the stars that will ever shine have already shone reminded me that I had once read that 6 percent of all the humans that have ever lived are alive today. The latter statistic is a consequence of the exponential growth of the human race (and, if it keeps growing, could eventually create problems for the idea of reincarnation).

You might not think it has anything to do with the stars. But philosophers and cosmologists have wondered if there is an answer to the question of why we live where and when we do.

The cartoon history that they would like to tell goes like this: Coming out of the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago, the universe consisted of hydrogen and helium and a little lithium. Our bodies are made of oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and iron that had to be synthesized in thermonuclear reactions in successive generations of stars that went bang and seeded space and future stars with heavier elements.

That took time. The Milky Way was born near the height of the star baby boom, about 10 billion years ago. The Sun and solar system, with its heady mix of life-ready elements, came into being 4.5 billion years ago. It took evolution another 3.8 billion years to make us, the putative princelings of the cosmos. Could it all have happened faster to someone else some place else? Nobody knows.

Nobody knows for sure, either, why cosmic star production has slowed down, the astronomers say.

In recent years, they have found evidence that some of the more violent denizens of the modern cosmos, like giant black holes and supernova explosions, can create powerful winds that blow the gas out of galaxies, preventing it from condensing into stars. One black hole in the galaxy NGC 1275 was found to be ?singing,? or belching pressure waves, to the tune of a B flat 57 octaves below middle C, thus squelching star formation over much of the entire Perseus cluster ? hundreds of galaxies.

Some theorists, notably Freeman Dyson of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, have suggested ways that life could go on past the twilight of the stars, by extracting energy from black holes, for example. But that was before astronomers discovered that dark energy ? what appears to be a sort of cosmic antigravity ? is speeding up the expansion of the universe.

If this continues, the future is really dark. Eventually the universe will be expanding so fast that most other galaxies will disappear from view forever. Eventually even atoms could be ripped apart.

Time for bed.

Sometimes the universe seems to me like one of those black-humored toys: a box with a button. When you push the button, a hand comes out 14 billion years later and turns the button off.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: November 21, 2012

An article on Tuesday about the birthrate of stars in the universe misstated the sound made by pressure waves coming out of a black hole in the galaxy NGC 1275. The sound is that of a B flat 57 octaves below middle C, not 27 octaves.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: November 21, 2012

An earlier version of this article?misstated the rate of star production in the universe today. The current consolidation rate of ?starstuff? into stars is about a million tons per minute per cubic light-year, or half a trillion tons per year per cubic light-year. It is not a million tons per year per cubic light-year.

2 tons of pigeon droppings in Swedish church tower

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? A hatch on a Swedish church tower inadvertently left open for some three decades resulted in 2 tons of pigeon droppings amassing in the tower.

The church's property manager says the layer of droppings was 30 centimeters (12 inches) deep when it was discovered during a May inspection of the Heliga Trefaldighets Kyrka in Gavle, 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of Stockholm.

Lennart Helzenius said on Thursday that church staff had been shocked by the sheer number of bags of excrement cleaners were removing from the tower. He says the droppings filled 80 bags in the first round of cleaning, and then just as many in the second round.

Helzenius says the hatch had probably been left open since the 1980s.

Bransa Cana confident about the Grade A1 480 metres flat race at Perry Barr

Perry Barr will become the hosting venue for the Grade A1 480 metres flat race on Tuesday, 20th November. Heading on for claiming their share from the total prize money of ?97 are, Bransa Cana, Cyclers Race, Catcherintherye, Maeves Prince, Overdale Fantasy and Barracuda Sky.

With the advantage of the red box is, Bransa Cana, while breaking out of the very opposite gate will be, Barracuda Sky.

Bidding for a hat-trick tonight through the race is the four-year-old black dog, Bransa Cana. He has now been racing since the three seasons and has got quite remarkable experience right up his sleeve.

His very first and the only Grade A1 attempt was in a 480 metres flat race on 1st May at Perry Barr. It turned fruitless as the blue trap, Bransa Cana, ended fifth after taking 29.63 seconds to complete the track distance.

The race was won by the favourite entry, Movealong Tevez, who made the transit to the other end in 29.33 seconds, leading by two lengths.

Boherduff Light?s son has been unbeaten in the last two attempts of the season and both of them were Grade A2 events.

The red trap won the Grade A2 480 metres flat race on 30th October, 2012 at Perry Barr. The favourite entry was quick to set the pace, ran by the rail, led from the very first spot, and held in there until the wire. It took him 29.20 seconds to make it to the other end of the wire.

Missing success by the mark of short head?s was, Catcherinthereye.

The I. Walker trained struck a back-to-back by winning the Grade A2 480 metres flat race on 11th November, 2012 at Perry Barr.

This time the four-year-old out of, Uncanny, was swift to get into a high gear. Breaking from the second slot, he stayed by the rail and reeled in for the wire from the very first spot. He declared dominance over the rest of the line-up in 29.00, leading by a length.

He is backed by 5 to 1 chances for the race tonight while the most favoured candidate for the race is the 9 to 4 shot, Cyclers Ace.

The incredible influence of football | My Sunday News

Maybe you hate football, maybe you are addicted to it, or maybe you don?t even care about it one way or another. The fact is, all sports played and watched in our country have an enormous impact on our economy and our lives, but none more than football. One day, as I was driving to Arlington Heights to watch my 6-year-old grandson, Gianni, play flag football, my mind began to drift to thoughts of the number of kids and adults involved in this sport.

Yes, it?s a very dangerous activity, especially at the professional level where 300-pound men smash into each other with great motivation to dominate their opponent, be it for financial gain, fame, personal pride, or all of the above. Sandwiched in between Gianni and the Brian Urlachers are millions of athletes, plus all the jobs that are directly or indirectly involved. Most of them are from the service and industrial sectors of our economy. They include medical, clothing, food and beverage, construction, media, hospitality, transportation, schools, recreation, and manufacturing, to name just a few. The list goes on with millions of jobs attached to the tentacles of just this one sport.

Don?t forget the jobs created by construction companies that build the stadium and facilities for fans to attend these events. What about the auxiliary activities, such as marching bands, cheerleaders, dance and pom pom groups? Think of all the energy used by all of the above, the zillions of gallons of fuel and kilowatts of power and the number of workers within those industries.

When you stop and think about it, would a school such as Notre Dame be as prominent if not for the likes of Knute Rockne and Touchdown for Jesus? What would take the place of the nation?s highest rated TV production ? the Super Bowl ? which commands unspeakable costs for a time spot. What would Texans do without Friday night football? What would take the place of Monday and Thursday Night Football on TV? Who would eat all the pizzas and salsa and chips and chicken wings? What about all the prayers said by players and fans asking God to intercede in their behalf? What about the millions of fantasy football players? Would they read a book or go to the movies? Shop or take up pickleball? Or just take a nap?

Okay, I do get carried away at times. But seriously, do I worry about Gianni? Of course I do, even though he wears a sponge-type helmet designed to protect him and other participants. I worry about all the kids and adults who risk injury in all sports, not just football. At age 74, I am still risking injury (or worse) playing sports. The fact is that none of this will change, at least in my lifetime.

The bottom line is I know what football and the rest of our sports mean to us as a nation in terms of our economy and opportunities for employment and as a recreational activity. Does this mean that you and I have nothing to say about the direction of sports in our country? In many cases, I?m sorry to say, we don?t; no more than we can personally affect the price of a gallon of gas. There are a lot of greedy individuals involved in the business of sports. They set a bad example for our youth. We also witness poor examples by athletes using drugs, disrespecting rules, etc. It bothers me that some professional athletes are revered as heroes even though they make bad choices in life, when the real heroes are those that serve humanity.

The most important things we can do as older Americans is to help teach those around us to respect each other, walk and talk sportsmanship in our daily lives, and be watchdogs for any potential injury risks and hazards.

If you feel strongly about this as I do, my suggestion is to become involved as a volunteer in a local youth activity. The park district and school teams can always use volunteers to assist in a variety of ways. It?s fun to be around the kids of today. Most of them are very respectful and welcome mentors. Sports are not your cup of tea? Then, how about the arts or volunteering in a classroom? Many of my neighbors are giving a day a week in our schools and loving it. Roberta Langham, Stan Auster, and Emma Burns, to name a few, are tutoring students in schools and the library in Huntley. I have worked with the marching bands at Huntley and Jacobs high schools and just love it! I sometimes feel like I?m benefiting at least as much as the students I work with in the percussion section.

So, you see, this column isn?t really about football or sports in general after all. It?s about volunteerism and being an example. It?s also about contributing and making a difference in the lives of others. Many organizations, sport teams, and classrooms can benefit from our experiences and training; after all, most of us are retired with more time on our hands.

I hope this motivates and inspires you, if you aren?t already volunteering, to make a few calls, talk to your neighbors, and discover where you can make a difference. That?s what I call old-fashioned American teamwork!
