Olympic organisers are set for a backlash after the synchronised swimming was oversold by thousands of tickets.

London 2012 have admitted an error has led to 10,000 too many tickets being sold for sessions.

Many of those people who have bought tickets for the Aquatics Centre events have been asked to return them. They will now be offered tickets to other events at the Olympics.

A London 2012 spokeswoman said: 'As a result of finalising the seating configurations in our venues and reconciling the millions of Olympic and Paralympic ticket orders against the seating plans for around 1,000 sporting sessions, we have discovered an error in seats available in four synchronised swimming sessions.

'In December we contacted around 3,000 customers who had applied for tickets in the four sessions during the second round sales process. We are exchanging their synchronised swimming tickets for tickets in other sports that they originally applied for.'

The issue arose after the first round of sales last year. Synchronised swimming was not initially oversubscribed but when tickets were put back on sale, a human error meant thousands of extra ones - which did not exist - were available.

Around 3,000 customers who bought tickets in the second round of sales have been contacted by organisers LOCOG.

They have been offered the chance to exchange their tickets for other events for which they also applied and were originally unsuccessful.

It is the latest controversy to surround the ticket sales. Hundreds of thousands failed to land any seats to the Games and there were complaints when the website struggled to cope with the huge demand.

In May, more than a million tickets will go on sale. It is some of these tickets which have now been made available to those who thought they were heading to the synchronised swimming.

The process for people to resell any unwanted tickets in their possession opens on Friday.
