Nigerian church collapses during Easter mass

MAKURDI, Nigeria | April 8, 2012

As many as 22 people were killed in Nigeria when a church collapsed during Easter mass, authorities in Makurdi said.

Police said there did not appear to be any terrorist involvement in the collapse, which a witness told Vanguard occurred after a heavy rainstorm.

The incident occurred at Christ the King Parish Church where worshippers were taking part in an Easter vigil mass. The Roman Catholic diocese had no immediate comment other than a brief statement from a staff member who said the bishop was aware of the tragedy.
