Wild things happen in Washington win at Southern Illinois

MARION, Ill. ? Jovan Rosa went 5-for-5 with four extra-base hits to spark the Wild Things? comeback, and Darian Sandford hit a game-winning single in the top of the 10th inning, as Washington rallied to defeat Southern Illinois, 8-7, Saturday night at Rent One Park.

The Wild Things avoided being swept by overcoming an early five-run deficit. Washington still trailed, 6-3, entering the ninth inning, when it scored four times to take a 7-6 lead on a bases-loaded triple by Rosa.

Southern Illinois loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth against Jhonny Montoya (3-0) but managed to score only the tying run, when Gerardo Avila grounded into a double play.

Two former Miners played key roles in the 10th as Mario Mercedes had a one-out single, advanced on a groundout by A.J. Nunziato and scored the go-ahead run when Sandford laced a single through right side of the infield.

One night after scoring nine runs in the first inning and holding on for a four-run win, Southern Illinois scored five runs in the second inning against Washington starter Shawn Blackwell. The Wild Things pulled to within 5-3, but the Miners scored what looked like an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.

Washington, however, loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth against Race Parmenter (2-1), who was on the verge of working out of the jam following two strikeouts. Quincy Latimore then beat out an infield single to make the score 6-4, and Rosa followed with his three-run triple off the wall in left centerfield.

Rosa had three doubles, a triple and four RBI.

The Wild Things begin a three-game series at home against Normal today (5:05 p.m.).
