Dale Sveum, part of the Red Sox' coaching staff on the 2004 championship team, is on Boston's list of candidates to replace Terry Francona as manager, a baseball source indicated.

Sveum, who turns 48 next month, was the third-base coach for the Red Sox in 2004 and 2005. He came under criticism for being too aggressive in the role and left the organization after the 2005 season.

The Red Sox have not yet asked for permission to talk to Sveum since the Milwaukee Brewers, for whom Sveum serves as hitting coach, are still in the postseason. The Brewers host the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 5 of the NLDS Friday night.

Sveum played for 12 seasons in the big leagues, almost half of those with Milwaukee. He also played for Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Oakland, Seattle, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox before retiring in 1999.

He managed three seasons at Double-A for Pittsburgh before joining the Red Sox' coaching staff in 2004. After leaving Boston, he returned to the Brewers, where, at various times he has served as the Brewers' third-base coach, bench coach, hitting coach, and, in 2008, their interim manager when Ned Yost was fired with 12 games to play.

The Brewers went 7-5 in those final 12 games, then lost in the NLDS to the Philadelphia Phillies in four games.

Sveum is among a handful of current major-league coaches the Red Sox are known to be considering for their managerial opening. Others include Tampa Bay's Dave Martinez, Philadelphia's Pete Mackanin and Cleveland's Sandy Alomar Jr.????
