The economy has been especially tough on many American families and for some, the last thing on their minds is home accessories and decor. As such, home decor has evolved greatly from designer pieces to antiques and hand-me-downs. In fact, it?s not uncommon for a good majority of the home accessories in a person?s home to be from various garage sales, family hand-me-downs, thrift store purchases and so forth.

When it comes to home decor and various furnitures, you may find yourself attracted to your grandmother?s coffee table or your great aunt?s dining set. The appeal of these items is multi-facetted: they?re heirlooms, family hand-me-downs that you can treasure without ridicule from friends or other family members. Plus, they?re often sold to you at a significantly discounted price or even better, they?re given to you for free.

Of course, it goes without saying that you should inquire to your relatives about items that may be hidden away or buried in basements or attics in mothball filled, slowly deteriorating cardboard boxes. You?ll never know what you?ll find: beautiful antique mid century modern wall clocks, brass charger plates with a beautiful aged patina or even beautiful bone china or porcelain dish sets.

However, not everything is a hand-me-down or family heirloom. The economy has also recently boosted the sales of second-hand stores, thrift stores and even antique stores. People are finding better ways to invest their money. For example, antique furnitures made from solid wood are typically better constructed in comparison to the modern, pressed wood particle furnitures of today.

At thrift stores and antique stores alike, you?ll be surprised at the amazing finds you?ll come across. You?ll find that you can find items to suit nearly any taste or home decor style from modern to traditional, contemporary to Victorian, mid century modern or eclectic.

However, there are a few items you should try to avoid buying used. This includes electronics, computer parts and so forth. The truth is, you don?t know why these items were donated. It could be pure dumb luck that the $3,000 espresso machine was donated because it wasn?t quite what the owner wanted and also wasn?t returnable, making it practically brand new. However, that expensive machine might also be broken and a total waste of your $30.

When you?re shopping second-hand, keep your eye out for reusable items: charger plates, solid wood furnitures, oval mirrors and square mirrors, wall art and so forth. Most importantly, if you?ve got items you?re no longer using, consider donating them for the greater good of interior design
