WALTHAM, Mass. - President Obama's campaign outraised Republican nominee Mitt Romney's campaign in August, raking in $114 million to Romney's $111.6 million.
It is the first month the Obama campaign has raised more cash than Romney since April when the GOP candidate collected $40.1 million to Obama's $43.6 million.
The Romney Victory Effort, comprised of Romney for President, Romney Victory and the Republican National Committee, reports having $168.5 million on hand after August. The Obama campaign did not provide this figure.
It is the third straight month that Romney's Victory Fund has broken the $100 million mark. It raised $101.3 million in July and $106.1 million in June.
"Americans are not better off than they were four years ago and they are looking for a change of leadership," said Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick and RNC Chairman Reince Preibus in a joint written statement. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are offering bold solutions to our country's problems. That is why we are seeing such tremendous support from donors across the country."
Obama campaign manager Jim Messina wrote in a statement that the campaign fought back "substantially" against the "special interests writing limitless checks to support Mitt Romney."
"Fueled by contributions from more than 1.1 million Americans donating an average of $58 - more than 317,000 who had never contributed to the campaign before - we raised a total of more than $114 million," wrote Messina. "That is a critical downpayment on the organization we are building across the country, the largest grassroots campaign in history."
The president's Twitter account, which was tweeting details of their fundraising haul, also tweeted a warning to supporters: "No celebrating, because they're going to have an even bigger September. But now we know we can match them, doing this our way."
