Tiger will play in Frys.com Open

Tiger Woods has decided which of the four Fall Series events he will play ahead of his next previously scheduled start at the Australian Open, and it is the one you might least expect.

Woods confirmed an Associated Press report on his website on Monday that he will play at the Frys.com Open at CordeValle in northern California from October 6-9.

?I always enjoy competing in my home state, and this tournament fits my schedule perfectly,? Woods said. ?I?m looking forward to seeing some old friends.?

Many would have anticipated Woods playing in either Las Vegas ? site of his first tour win and a town he loves ? or Disney, where he won for the second time in his career, played consistently until 2005 and is played in the state of Florida, where he resides.

Instead, Woods chose a course that suits his game fairly well and does not have the poor optics of playing in Sin City, backdrop for many tabloid stories about the 14-time major winner.

The tournament takes place not too far from Stanford, where Woods attended college, and in the state where he grew up. It will be his first Fall Series start since the concept was developed as a postscript to the FedEx Cup in 2007.

Woods says playing an event for the first time was an aim of his in 2011.

He said, ?One of my goals this year was to participate in a tournament I hadn?t played before, and now, I will.?

Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples announced last week that Woods would be one of his two captain?s picks for the team headed to Royal Melbourne in November. Couples said at the Boeing Classic that Woods had given him assurance such a schedule change would be coming per Couples? request for Woods to play at least once more before the Australian Open, played the week before the Presidents Cup.
